Workshop 1. Accelerometer

The interpretation and automatic classification of accelerometer data for monitoring behaviour is not a trivial task. Currently we have almost 200 million records, but these are still hardly used. In this workshop we will interpret examples of data, we will prepare a training set by annotating data, and we will present, design, and discuss workflows to develop classifications of bird behaviour. Please contact UvA-BiTS@uva.nl well in advance if you want to use your own data during the workshop.

Workshop 2. Catching and tagging

The workshop will bring together researchers working on a wide range of species and techniques. We will share experiences and ideas across projects, with the aim of looking at how we may be able to improve both capturing methods and tagging (e.g. harnesses) techniques. The format of the workshop will be to start with a few very short presentations (max  5 minutes each), followed by an open group discussion. Bring your attachment materials and photo’s. Please contact UvA-BiTS@uva.nl before mid November if you want to contribute with a short presentation.

Workshop 3. Exploring bird behaviour in a virtual laboratory

In this workshop you will learn about, and actually work behind the computer, with some of the key tools available in the UvA-BiTS virtual laboratory. We will briefly describe the different elements of the system and provide you with a few exercises to give you some hands on experience with accessing your data via the database, writing useful queries, creating visualizations that you can explore in Google Earth, and where to find documentation. We will also invest time in discussing ideas for future developments. The UvA-BiTS virtual lab is there for you use and we plan to help you get the most out of it.

Workshop 4. Future developments

The GPS-trackers, the bird tracking software on the base station, and the services of the virtual lab are improved from time to time. We will present the latest developments and together with users we will organise a brainstorm on the ‘nice to haves’. If you are using nice (software) tools that are of interest for the user community, please contact UvA-BiTS@uva.nl well in advance. We may want to include this in the workshop.
